Job Numbers for December – Canada and US:

The job numbers for both Canada and the US were released this morning for December.  Here are the highlights:

CANADA:

·         Employment rose by 40,000 in December, the fourth increase in 5 months; this is 35,000 more than what economists expected
·         The unemployment rate declined by .1% to 7.1%, the lowest rate in 4 years
·         Employment in Ontario rose by 33,000 in December
·         Transportation, warehouse and construction led the way in new hiring
·         On the negative side, youths 15-24 continue to have high unemployment rates increasing .1% to 14.1%
·         Alberta leads the way for the province with the lowest unemployment rate at 4.5%
·         Newfoundland and Labrador continues to have the worst provincial unemployment rate at 11.5%

US:

·         155,000 jobs were added in December
·         The unemployment rate was 7.8%, the same level as the month before
